Conference in Vienna on "dispute resolution in Russia - legislation, trends and consequences for doing business"

Moscow, 7 April 2017 – The Conference on "Dispute Resolution in Russia - Legislation, Trends and Consequences for Doing Business" was held in Vienna on 7th of April. The conference was organized by the Russian Arbitration Association (RAA) and the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC). The purpose of the conference was to give the representatives of Russian and Austrian companies and law firms the opportunity to learn about the important changes to Russian legislation governing various aspects of dispute resolution and the performance of arbitration cases.

The speakers at the conference included:

Wolfgang Brandstetter, Minister of Justice of Austria

Dmitry Yevgenievich Lyubinsky, Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Austria

Alexander Ivanovich Potemkin, Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in Austria

Dr. Stefan Riegler, Member of the Board of the Austrian Arbitration Association

Dr. Manfred Heider, Secretary General, VIAC

Vladimir Khvalei, Chairman of the Board of RAA

BEITEN BURKHARDT was also represented among the speakers by our colleague Alexander Bezborodov, Lawyer and Partner. Mr Bezborodov spoke on the "Specifics of Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitration Awards in the Russian Federation".

During this year’s conference particular attention was paid to the recently enacted Law on Arbitration and its effect on international arbitration, including on the arbitrability of corporate disputes involving Russian parties.

The following issues were also discussed at the conference: an overview of arbitration in Austria, Vienna as a venue for arbitration to resolve disputes involving parties from the CIS.
